How to Establish a CBO
For many young people in Africa, especially those outside formal employment or with a community-organizing mindset, establishing a community-based organization (CBO) is a powerful alternative to starting a for-profit business. CBOs can access grants, partner with NGOs and local government, mobilize volunteers, and address real local problems while creating livelihoods for members. At ActionPath Africa, training youth and adults to establish a CBO turns social energy into structured, legal, and sustainable action.
How We Train Communities to Form CBOs
We train communities to mobilize and form community-based organizations (CBOs) as one of the most effective ways to strengthen local ownership and sustainability. From the Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya to Tanga in Tanzania, we have trained youth and women to use various tools to conduct sensitization meetings and identify community champions using participatory tools, develop constitutional development, and support them with registration so they can gain legal recognition.
Business & Financial Training
We train CBO members to start businesses and write business plans, train their leadership in financial management and project planning, provide them with toolkits for proposal writing, budgeting, and reporting, and introduce peer learning sessions where CBOs exchange experiences and best practices.
Fundraising & Partnerships
We train CBOs to develop fundraising strategies for local contributions, grants, and partnerships; connect them with NGOs, INGOs, and private sector actors for joint initiatives; and support them in creating income-generating activities to sustain operations.
Transparency & Accountability
We support CBOs to establish transparent financial systems and regular reporting mechanisms, train their leaders on MEARL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, Research, and Learning) to measure impact, and encourage community scorecards and feedback forums for accountability.
Networking & Advocacy
We also train CBOs on networking and advocacy and facilitate linkages with county governments, development partners, and umbrella networks so they can participate in policy dialogues and community forums and document and share success stories to attract more support.
